How do you publish your book on Amazon?
I’m sure that this is not the first time you are asking this question.
This may not even be the first blog post that you are seeing on this particular topic. I trust that the fact that you are researching on this topic is because you are interested in publishing your book on Amazon.
In this blog post, we would look at the different steps you should take to become an Amazon published author. And remember, you do not need to be a writer or the best word-spinner in the world to achieve this feat.
So, let’s dig in.
Steps To Publish Your Book On Amazon
Create The Book
Well, this is a no-brainer. If there is no book, there would be nothing to publish, right?
So, the first step to publishing your book on Amazon would naturally be to create the book you want to sell.
If you are not a writer and do not know how to write, all you need to do is hire a ghostwriter to create the book for you. A good ghostwriter already knows what to do and how to format the book to fit into kindle publishing specifications.
If you have chosen to write the book by yourself or you have already written the book and you are only looking for how to publish, then you should read our post on how to write a book that would sell.
After writing your book, you need to format to kindle specifications, then create a clickable table of content such that anyone who clicks on a particular chapter is taken directly to that chapter in the book.
This formatting is dependent on what word processor you are using. So, you may need to do a quick Google search for “how to add a table of contents to a document using (your word processor)”.
Note that you do not need to number the pages of your kindle book because each book adjusts to the size of the screen. So, there would be different numbering for different devices.
After formatting the book, you need to put the book aside. You can decide to convert the book to PDF in case you want to send it to someone for review. It is advised to publish your book in word format to keep the integrity of your formatting.
Now, we move to the next step.
Create An Attractive Book Cover
One thing you need to understand is that on Amazon, people judge a book by its cover, literally.
If your goal is to actually put up a book that would actually sell (not just sales from your family members), then you MUST have a very good and attractive book cover.
No, don’t just get on Canva (if you are not an expert) and design a cover and turn it to the left and to the right and tell yourself, “this should do”.
If you are not a professional graphics designer, get a professional graphics designer to work on your book cover and give you something that would be worth seeing as an Amazon bestseller. There are stipulated dimensions for the covers that must be followed also.
Create An Amazon Kindle Account
This is when the publishing journey begins. Get on Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) and either log in with your Amazon account or sign up if you do not have an Amazon account yet.
Once you successfully sign in to your dashboard, you would see an option to create a new book. Click on the Kindle eBook if you are planning to have a soft copy of the book. However, if you only want to publish a hard copy, go ahead and click on Paperback and move to the next step.
Upload Your Book And Cover To Kindle
Start by inputting your book title and subtitle. Choosing a book title is another topic that has been handled in another post and you should check it out. This is because your title goes a long way in determining who picks up your book and who doesn’t.
Input the name(s) of the author(s) and contributor(s). If the book was not written by you alone, you would need to add these details and know what role each person played. This would help you avert any legal issues in the future.
Write your book description. You need to understand the role your book description plays in the sales and marketing of your book. There are keywords that people search for when they are searching for a book on Amazon. You should optimize your book for these keywords, else your book may not rank for those keywords. If you get on Fiverr, you would find people offering book description services at affordable prices. It is best to get a professional to do this.
Choose your publishing rights. If your book has copyright issues, Amazon will block it from being published. So, you need to be sure you possess the full copyright to the book that has been written. This is also another reason you should get a professional writer to write your book so that you can avoid plagiarism issues.
Choose up to 7 keywords that you want your book to rank for. If you do not have up to 7 keywords, choose as many as you have. There’s no need to input keywords that are not relevant to your book.
Choose the categories your book falls into. When publishing your book on Amazon, the categories are the greatest determinant of whether you achieve the bestseller status or not. The more the number of books in a category, the harder it would be to rank in those categories. We explain this more in our post on becoming an Amazon bestseller.
If your book is a children’s book, choose the grades.
Choose if you want your book to be on pre-order first or you are releasing immediately.
Then, save and continue.
The next page is where you upload your manuscript and book cover and ISBN(if you already have one).
On setting the price, you need to understand Amazon Kindle’s pricing structure. If you place your book price between $0.99 and $2.98, you will get a 35% royalty. However, If you place the price between $2.99 and $9.99, you get a 70% royalty. If you place the price from $10 and above, your royalty falls back to 35%. This is why the sweet spot for pricing is between $2.99 and $9.99.
However, if you know that a lower price would attract more people to your book and help you turnover a good sales volume, then a price below $2.99 should make some sense to you.
I would advise that you allow your book for lending as Amazon will pay you when people lend your book to read.
Go ahead and save and publish your book.
Create An Author Central Account
If you plan on making Kindle work for you and you do not just want to be a one time publisher, I would advise that you create an Author Central Page. This helps you to manage all your titles, edit your profile, run promotions, etc. from one place. It also makes it easy for people to follow you and be able to go for your other books.
You can create your account at http://authorcentral.amazon.com/, then, you can add your book(s) by clicking on “add more books”. It will take you to a search tab that allows you to search for your book. Add the book and you can edit your book description to add different fonts and all of that.
Let Family, Friends And Foes Know About It
Yes! You are now an Amazon author! You have published your book on Amazon! Revel in that for a moment.
Then, go out there and let everyone know about it. Put it on social media. Put it on your website. Share it with everyone who needs to know. That’s how you get to make some sales.
There are promotion options that Amazon has made available. You can explore these options too and you can enrol in Amazon advertising. We would treat this as another topic on our blog.
I trust that this post has helped you understand how to publish your book on Amazon. Now, you can go ahead and publish your book.
